The official portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama were unveiled Monday at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
Kehinde Wiley’s painted the portrait of Barack Obama and Amy Sherald is the person who painted Michelle Obama. Wiley’s portrait will be permanently placed in the Museum’s America’s Presidents Exhibition.
Michelle Obama chosen the Baltimore-based artist who won first place in the National Portrait Gallery in 2016 from the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition and Sherald already has her work in the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Sherald who is 44 years-old has graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with her Master in Fine Arts.
After the unveiling ceremony Sherald’s painting will be displayed in the Museum’s Recent Acquisitions Corridor through early November.
